And into the big mountains we go
May 25th, 2008 by Ricky BlayneyThe Giro has finally got going. Yep we are in the mountains. It’s time to go out of my way now to watch the racing because this is were the race is won and lost. Tour de France champion Alberto Contador who in riding for Astana will not be riding the 2008 Tour has put his eggs in the Giro basket and so far it appears to be working. The young Spaniard has moved into the first place overall. Sure he lost a little time to former Giro winner Di Luca yesterday but not much and today he finished on a par with the stage winner Emanuele Sella. So they said that today’s stage was the hardest one of the race and with that behind him Contador has surely got to be feeling confident carrying a 33 second lead on Riccardo Ricco and a 55 second lead on Di Luca.
Gabriele Bosisio had been leading the race into today having won a stage a few days back and picked up some good time. Unfortunately he fell away in the big mountains losing 14′47 on the top boys.
Only the provisional results are in so no word yet on the Brit or Irish guys but if the race isn’t long finished then they are probably still climbing in the mountains. They all lost serious time in yesterdays mountain stage and are on the suffering train today no doubt.

A goodluck shoutout to all those doing the Tour of Mayo today. It’s a tour in the real sence of the word, not a race though I’m sure some will look on it as that anyway! Goodluck people.
