Tour of Scotland 1997, Day 2: Lochgilphead – Tobermory, 58.90 miles

Sunday 13 July 1997 by Richard Blayney

Tent down and underway again in more nice weather. Took the road up to Oban with a few climbs to really get the legs going. Arrived in Oban but had time to kill before getting the boat so grabbed some lunch. We then left the mainland for the first time on the tour over to the Isle of Mull were we would ride the length of it before camping for another night. After almost 59 miles on the bike, what you want to do is cruise into town and down into the campsite … You don’t want to have to go up some steep little climb just to get your nights sleep, but in Tobermory that is what you have to deal with. We arrived in the town, got directions to the campsite and hauled the over weight bikes up the hill behind the town to pitch the tent for the night.

Tobermory is a typical small fishing village by the sea. With less than 1000 inhabitants it is a peaceful place. The buildings all along the towns main street which runs alongside the water are multi colored making it even more impressive for photographs. Most of the colored building are made up of homes, shops and restaurants and it was one of the restaurants we treated ourselves to that night were I had my first ever plate of Scampi, since I was in a fishing town. It was fantastic.
